20 Years of Glow: From Classroom Struggles to Color Theory Mastery

This June marks a milestone I can hardly believe: 20 years since I walked into Paul Mitchell to become a licensed professional. Looking back, the year leading up to that moment was the ultimate turning point.

I started my journey at TSU, and while that year changed everything about me, I struggled to find my footing academically, finishing with a 1.9 GPA. But then, I found my true home in Esthetician school. For the first time, learning felt like coming home. I wanted to soak up every drop of knowledge about skincare and makeup.

The Lifelong Lesson: Why the Learning Never Stops

No matter how prestigious your school is, the beauty industry is a constant evolution. I still spend my days studying and keeping up with trends because, in this field, your knowledge is your power. One of the most vital—and often most difficult—skills to master is Color Theory. Applying color theory to real life is where the magic happens. To find a perfect match, you have to understand the DNA of color:

Primary Colors (Red, Yellow, Blue): These are the base of everything. When you look at a skin tone, first identify which of these "anchors" it leans toward.
Secondary Colors (Green, Orange, Purple): Formed by mixing primaries, these help you understand how makeup will shift and adjust once it hits the client's skin.
Tertiary Colors (The "In-Betweens"): These are the custom mixes (like Red-Orange or Blue-Green) that allow us to achieve that seamless, everyday glam.

The deeper you understand these layers, the more effortless it becomes to celebrate your client’s unique beauty.

Giving Back: The Black Business Expo at KIPP Tulsa

During Black History Month, I had the joy of speaking at the KIPP Tulsa University Prep High School Black Business Expo. It was a full-circle moment. I shared my story of growing up with a 504 learning plan and my early college struggles to remind those teens that your "start" doesn't dictate your "finish."

I told them something I truly believe: Not everyone is meant to be a solo business owner. Every visionary needs a team of dedicated professionals to bring a dream to life.
