Teen Maintenance Simple and Healthy

Five years ago, I started Denzel's loc journey, and watching his hair grow and mature has been truly amazing. While doing Locs are my side job and I don't take on many clients, focusing on his hair has been a special project.

Since he’s a busy teen boy, my priority is keeping his maintenance as easy and uncomplicated as possible. A healthy loc journey doesn't have to be high-maintenance!

Here are the simple steps we follow to ensure Denzel’s locs stay healthy, strong, and well-maintained:

1. Flexible Wash Schedule

We maintain a flexible approach to washing, dictated by need rather than a strict calendar.

Frequency: Denzel washes his hair every week to two weeks. This ensures the scalp stays clean without stripping the locs of necessary natural oils.
Product: We use a high-quality peppermint and tea tree oil shampoo. These ingredients are fantastic for clarifying the scalp, fighting dandruff, and providing a refreshing tingle, which is great for active teens!

2. Daily Hydration is Key

Hydration is essential for keeping locs soft, preventing breakage, and maintaining a healthy sheen.

Daily Mist: Every day, Denzel uses a spray bottle containing a mix of hair oils and water. This light mist hydrates the hair shaft without causing product buildup.
Custom Oil Blend: The specific oil we use in the mixture changes depending on his hair condition after his retie. This allows us to address seasonal dryness or any specific needs the locs might have at that time.

3. The Retie Schedule (Low Commitment)

Because we focus heavily on daily maintenance, we can keep the retie frequency stretched out, minimizing stress on the roots.

Frequency: We do reties every 3 to 4 months. This time-frame works perfectly for his growth rate and keeps the maintenance commitment low for a busy teenager.

Starting Denzel's locs and guiding him through the maintenance process has been a wonderful experience. It proves that with consistency and the right routine, locs can be beautiful, healthy, and incredibly easy to manage!
