Stop the Rumors: Aging Skin Can (and Should!) Still Shimmer

I keep hearing the same advice repeated everywhere: as you age, you should stay away from makeup with shine or shimmer. That often means dropping all highlighters.

To that, I say: "NO WAY!" You can’t take my shine away from me.

While I understand the thinking behind this outdated advice—that shimmer can emphasize texture and fine lines—the real problem isn't the highlight itself; it's the ingredients.

The Real Culprit: Talc and Harsh Glitter

The reason many traditional shimmery products can make skin look older is due to the fact that they are often high in talc. Talc can sit heavily on the skin, settling into fine lines and creating that undesirable, caked-on appearance. Harsh, chunky glitter particles can also cling to dry patches and exaggerate skin texture.

So, it's not the highlighter that's "aging" your skin; it's the low-quality ingredients like talc and heavy glitter.

The Solution: Shop for Pearlescent Perfection

You absolutely can—and should—wear shimmer! The trick is to swap heavy products for those with a refined, soft texture.

When shopping for highlighters and shimmery shadows, look for the wording "pearlescent." This is a great way to get a youthful glow without the drawbacks.

What is Pearlescent?

Pearlescent in makeup refers to a finish that gives a soft, lustrous glow, similar to the inside of a seashell or a natural pearl. It creates a subtle, iridescent sheen that gives a light-reflecting effect without being glittery or metallic.

The luminous quality comes from light bouncing off layered pigments. This means the color appears to shift slightly as you move, giving you that beautiful, lit-from-within glow.

You'll often see this finish in products like:

Highlighters: For a natural, radiant luminosity.
Eye-shadows: For a sophisticated, multidimensional look.
Illuminating Primers: To give the entire face a smooth, radiant base.

The takeaway? Don't let old rules limit your glow. Look for quality, talc-free formulas with a pearlescent finish, and let your natural radiance shine!
