Preparing for a photoshoot requires a bit more precision and depth than your everyday makeup routine. With Ashley heading to a shoot for singer/songwriter Matthew Funches, JT demonstrates how to use the "look LAMIK" philosophy to create a bold, high-definition look using all-natural, skin-friendly products.

The Foundation: Healthy Skin First

Before the makeup even begins, skin care is the priority.

  • Houston Skin Challenges: With fluctuating weather in Houston, your skin can break out easily. JT emphasizes using the right moisturizers to balance the skin before applying any color [01:53, 02:10].

  • Prepping & Priming: A lightweight, non-oil-based moisturizer is used to prime the skin, followed by K34 Brightening Cream to cover any small spots or blemishes [15:48, 16:32].

Step-by-Step: The "Bright Eyes" Technique

For this look, we’re using vibrant, spring-inspired shades like "Awkward" and "Island Breeze" [03:00, 05:14].

  1. The Crease First: Instead of starting with the lid, JT starts with the darker color ("Awkward") in the crease to create a distinct, retro-inspired shape [03:12, 04:44].

  2. Side-to-Side Motion: Use a side-to-side motion to extend the color out into a soft triangle point that follows the line of your eyebrow arch [04:12, 05:03].

  3. Dabbing for Intensity: Apply the "Island Breeze" shade to the lid using a dabbing motion to ensure maximum color payoff [05:23].

  4. Effortless Blending: Blend the two shades upward into the brightening cream for a seamless transition that still leaves your highlights visible [06:51, 07:31].

Advanced Contouring & Highlighting

To create depth for the camera, JT uses multiple shades of foundation and powder:

  • The Highlight: Apply K33 Brightening Cream (lighter than skin tone) underneath the eyes to highlight the face without the "halo" effect typical of talc-based products [17:18, 18:15].

  • Two-Tone Foundation: Use a lighter foundation (M26) under the eyes and on the bridge of the nose, and a matching skin-tone foundation (M28) on the rest of the face. Blend them where they meet for a natural, sculpted look [19:08, 21:26].

  • Setting the Highlight: Use a lighter mineral powder (like Light Caramel) under the eyes to absorb oils and set the highlight, rather than using heavy stage powders that can be harmful to the skin [24:51, 25:22].

Finishing Touches

  • The "Ombre" Lip: Outline the lips with a Chocolate Liner, fill with a berry-toned lipstick (Kudos), and top with Peach Lip Gloss to create a custom color that stays put throughout the shoot [28:04, 30:08].

  • Professional Lashes: Apply 100% human hair strip lashes for an effortless, glamorous finish. Pro-tip: Let the glue dry until it's sticky before applying, and always have your client look down instead of closing their eyes to avoid squinching [08:16, 11:22].

Get the Look: A Step-by-Step Guide Ready to recreate this stunning makeup look? Here’s a breakdown of the products and techniques we used.
