Why Kim Roxie Says “No” to Black Lipliner (Unless You’re an Icon)

In a recent workshop at the LAMIK boutique, our founder Kim Roxie shared a hilarious and insightful story about one of the most debated tools in the makeup bag: Black Lipliner.

The Icon Exception

Kim shared that there is only one woman she would ever allow to wear black lip-liner: the legendary Phyllis [00:11]. Known for her soulful voice and unmistakable style, Phyllis famously paired a sharp black liner with a bold red lip—a look that became her signature.

But as Kim points out, unless you are Phyllis herself, that harsh contrast often hides your beauty rather than revealing it.

Revealing, Not Masking

The LAMIK philosophy is that makeup should be an extension of your natural self. A harsh black line around the lips can:

Age the face: Dark, sharp lines can settle into fine lines.
