What Is Your Skin Type? (And How to Treat It)

As an Esthetician since 2006, the first thing I do when a client sits in my chair is determine their skin type. You can have the most expensive foundation in the world, but if it isn’t formulated for your specific skin needs, it won’t give you that flawless finish you deserve.

To Love Your Beauty, you have to understand your canvas! Grab a pen and paper, answer these four questions, and let’s find your perfect match.

The Quiz

1. How does your skin feel 30 minutes after washing it?

  • A. Tight, parched, or a little "itchy."

  • B. Shiny or slick, especially on the forehead and nose.

  • C. Shiny in the T-zone (forehead/nose) but tight on the cheeks.

  • D. Red, stinging, or irritated.

2. Look in the mirror. What do your pores look like?

  • A. Almost invisible.

  • B. Large and visible, especially on the nose and chin.

  • C. Visible only on the nose and forehead.

  • D. I have some redness, and my skin reacts to everything.

3. How does your makeup look by 3:00 PM?

  • A. Flaky or "patchy" in certain areas.

  • B. It has mostly "slid" off, or I look very greasy.

  • C. My nose is shiny, but the rest looks okay.

  • D. My skin looks blotchy or feels uncomfortable.

4. How often do you experience breakouts?

  • A. Rarely, if ever.

  • B. Frequently—blackheads and congestion are a struggle.

  • C. Occasionally, usually just on my chin or forehead.

  • D. My "breakouts" are usually red bumps or dry patches.

The Results

Mostly A’s: You have Dry / Mature Skin

Your skin needs moisture! You likely struggle with "dullness" and fine lines.

  • The Routine: Use a hydrating primer and stick to cream-based products.
