Navigating the world of natural hair can be a journey, and understanding your hair pattern is the first and most crucial step. Whether you're transitioning from relaxed to natural hair or you've been rocking your curls for years, knowing your hair type is key to maintaining healthy, beautiful hair.
The Importance of Knowing Your Hair Pattern
As you start to grow out your relaxed hair, you'll notice your natural hair pattern emerging at the roots.
Once you've figured out your natural hair pattern, this knowledge is essential for protecting your curls.
The key to getting the best of both worlds—maintaining your natural hair and trying new styles—is choosing the right wig.
Half Wig vs. Full Wig:
The Ultimate Guide
The model pictured below has a natural hair pattern of 3a or 3b. To maintain her beautiful curls, I would only recommend a half wig in patterns 2a, 2b, 2c, 3a, 3b, or 3c. A half wig in these patterns will blend seamlessly with her natural hair, requiring minimal heat styling.
However, if she wanted to try a look with a straighter or more coily texture (patterns 1, 4a, 4b, or 4c), a half wig would require her to use too much daily heat to blend her natural hair with the wig. In this case, a full wig would be the best choice. A full wig allows you to completely cover your hair, protecting your natural curls while giving you a completely new look.
The model below is wearing a half wig from the Turquoise Collection, styled with 14-inch, 16-inch, and 18-inch layers. This specific hair has not been colored; the beautiful highlights you see are from her natural hair blending perfectly with the wig.
By understanding your hair pattern and making smart choices about your wigs, you can explore endless styles without compromising the health of your natural hair.
Maltodextrin:
A Behind-the-Scenes Hero for Your Skin
When you think about the key players in your skincare routine, you probably think of ingredients like hyaluronic acid or vitamin C. But what about the unsung heroes that make those products work so well? One of those is maltodextrin. While it may sound a bit like a science experiment, this plant-based sugar is a powerhouse in cosmetic formulations.
What is Maltodextrin?
Maltodextrin is a plant-based sugar derived from starches like corn, rice, or potato.
Key Benefits of Maltodextrin
Oil Control and Mattifying: Maltodextrin acts as an excellent absorbent, helping to soak up excess oil and shine on the skin's surface.
This makes it a great ingredient for those with oily or combination skin, as it can help provide a more matte, balanced finish. Hydration and Skin Softening: Despite its oil-absorbing properties, maltodextrin also functions as a humectant and a skin-softener. It can attract and retain moisture, leaving your skin feeling hydrated, soft, and supple.
Product Stability and Texture: This is where maltodextrin really shines as a formulator's friend. It serves as a binding agent, helping to hold different ingredients together.
It also works as a stabilizer and a film-forming agent, creating a thin, protective layer on the skin that helps lock in moisture and protect against environmental stressors. This not only improves the feel of the product but also ensures it performs consistently over time.
A Safe and Versatile Ingredient
Maltodextrin is considered a safe ingredient for use in cosmetics.
So, the next time you see "maltodextrin" on an ingredient list, you'll know that this plant-based sugar is doing some serious work behind the scenes to give you a great product and even better skin.
Always check the ingredients before using a new product. Your skin is the largest organ. Remember, some of what you put on your skin can be absorbed into your bloodstream
