We’ve all been there—using the same brush for days (or weeks!) without a deep clean. But as a beauty professional, I can tell you: your makeup is only as good as the tools you use to apply it. Dirty brushes carry bacteria, old product, and oils that can cause breakouts and make your makeup look muddy.

To keep your skin healthy and your beauty glowing, follow these tips for cleaning your makeup brushes!

The Deep Clean Routine

Pick the Right Soap: Use a light, mild soap (like a gentle baby shampoo or a dedicated brush cleanser) to wash your bristles without damaging them.

Use a Cleaning Pad: For a true deep clean, use a silicone brush cleaning pad. Apply a small amount of soap directly to the brush and swirl it in a circular motion on the pad to loosen the trapped pigment.

The Warm Rinse: Rinse the bristles thoroughly in warm water. Continue until the water runs completely clear!

Reshape: After rinsing, gently squeeze out the excess water and make sure you do not change the shape of the brush head.

The Proper Dry: This is the most important step! Hang your brushes upside down to dry overnight. If you lay them flat, water can seep into the handle (the ferrule), but if you dry them bristles-up, the water ruins the glue.

Avoid Mildew: Ensure there is plenty of airflow around your brushes while they dry to prevent mildew from forming.

What NOT To Do

Skip the Alcohol: Don’t use alcohol to clean your brushes; it will dry out the bristles and make them scratchy on your face.
No Soaking: Do not soak your brushes in a bowl of water. This can dissolve the glue that holds the bristles in, causing them to fall out.

How Often Should You Clean?

Every Day: Use a quick-dry brush cleaner spray after each use to keep them fresh between deep cleans.
The Deep Clean: Depending on how often you wear makeup, you should do a full soap-and-water deep clean anywhere from once a week to once a month.

Pro Tip: Healthy Brushes = Healthy Skin

Think of your brushes like your skin—they need to be pampered to perform their best! When you use a clean brush to apply your makeup, the finish is smoother and your skin stays clear.
