Which Formula is Right for You?
When you’re shopping for a new eye shadow or blush, it’s easy to get distracted by a beautiful color. But as a professional, I look at the formula first! The way a product is made tells me how it will perform on your skin and what kind of finish you’ll get.
Here is my breakdown of the four main types of eye and blush colors and how to use them like a pro.
1. Cream Formulas
The Vibe: High Pigment & Long-Lasting.
JT’s Note: I love a good cream formula, but the "best" ones are those that dry down to a powder finish. They give you the easy blend-ability of a cream but the staying power of a powder. They are excellent for a bold, vibrant look.
2. Pressed Powder
The Vibe: Classic & Convenient.
JT’s Ingredient Warning: Be very careful here! Stay away from powders that contain Talc. Talc is a cheap filler that can make your eye shadow or blush look grayish or "ashy" on brown skin. Look for talc-free options to keep your colors true and vibrant.
The Vibe: Glowing & Versatile.
JT’s Note: Liquids are incredible for highlighters and bright, punchy colors. They give a beautiful "lit from within" glow.
Pro Tip: If you love a liquid color but want a shine-free finish, just set it with a matching powder to make it perfectly matte and budge-proof.
4. Loose Powder
The Vibe: Pure Pigment.
JT’s Note: If you want the most intense color possible, loose powder is the way to go. However, they can be a little messy!
Pro Tip: Always start with an eye primer as a base to give the powder something to "grab" onto. Also, be sure to clean under your eyes after applying, as loose pigment tends to "fall out" during application.
The JT Secret to Color
"The formula you choose should work with your skin type. If you’re oily, go for a cream-to-powder. If you’re dry, a liquid will be your best friend. It’s all about the chemistry!"
