10 Tips for Buying Concealer

Concealer is one of the most powerful tools in your makeup bag. It can brighten your eyes, hide a blemish, or even act as a highlight to bring your features forward. But if you buy the wrong formula, it can work against you.

As a beauty professional, I want to help you Love Your Beauty by picking products that enhance your skin rather than covering it up. Here is what you need to look for (and what to avoid) when shopping for a new concealer:

The Formula: What to Feel For

The Creamy Test: Look for a product that is creamy to the touch. This ensures it will blend smoothly into your skin.
Avoid the Grease: Stay away from products that feel greasy. Greasy concealers will make your makeup look too shiny and can clog your pores, leading to breakouts.
Don't Go Too Dry: Avoid products that feel dry or "stiff." Dry products will sit in your fine lines and make your makeup crack as you move throughout the day.
Watch the Thickness: Make sure the product is not too thick. A thick, heavy concealer can look "cakey" or fake in natural light.
Skip the Chalky Look: If a product looks chalky, it will make your skin look too white or ashy. Avoid chalky formulas at all costs!

The Color: Finding Your Shades

Know Your Undertones: Find a concealer that matches your natural undertone (cool, warm, or neutral). This is the secret to a seamless blend.
The Every-Day Shade: Your main concealer should be one shade lighter than your natural skin tone.
The Highlight Glow: For an extra "pop" or a brighter highlight, use a color that is two shades lighter than your skin tone.
The Soft Contour: To add dimension to your face, find a concealer that is 1-2 shades darker than your skin tone.

A Note on Color Correcting

Be Careful with Colors: Green, purple, and peach color-correcting concealers can be great, but less is more! Using too much will turn your face the color of the product you are using. Start with a tiny amount and build only if you need to.
