5 Rules for Finding Your New Favorite Lip

Don’t Be Afraid of Color: 

We’ve all been there—standing in front of a wall of lipsticks, feeling completely overwhelmed by all the shades of red, pink, and nude. How do you know which one is "the one"?

Finding a new lip color should be fun, not stressful! To help you Love Your Beauty and step out of your comfort zone, I’ve put together my five simple rules for lip color shopping. Follow these, and you’ll never buy a shade you don't love again.

5 Rules for Lip Shopping

1. Do Your Homework First Before you even leave the house, hop on social media. Check hashtags like #RedLipstick or #NudeLips to see how colors look on real people. Pick 1-3 colors you love, then head to the store. Don't forget to pack some face wipes in your purse!

2. The Hand Test Once you’re at the store, find 1-2 different brands that carry the shades you found online. Swipe a little bit of each color on the back of your hand. This helps you see the "undertone"—is it orange-red or blue-red?

3. Narrow the Field Look at the swatches on your hand. Out of everything you’ve reviewed, pick your top 1-4 favorites to actually try on your face.

4. The Photo Shoot This is the most important step! Try the color on your lips, then take two photos: one up-close shot of your lips and one full-face selfie. Seeing yourself in a photo is different than looking in a mirror—it helps you see if the color truly "pops." Use your wipes to clean your lips thoroughly before trying the next shade.

5. Texture & Buy Take a moment to look at your photos and feel the texture on your lips. Is it matte? Is it creamy? Once you find the one that feels as good as it looks, buy it with confidence!

  • Shop for the Formula: If you love a specific color but hate the way that brand feels (maybe it’s too dry or too sticky), keep shopping. You can almost always find that same "perfect" color in a different brand or formula.
