The world tried to label me before I could label myself.

I’ve heard the whispers and the shouts:

"You’re cute... for a black girl." "I’d date you if you just lost some weight." "Why do you talk so 'white'?" "You’re just loud and ghetto." I’ve felt the judgment when I say, "I can't dance," And the constant question: "Why do you wear so much makeup?" But then, I listen to the voices that matter.

My mother whispered, "You are beautiful." My brother commanded, "Hold your head up." My teachers pushed me, "Speak like you have read a book." My aunt marveled, "How do you do your makeup so perfect?" My friends cheered, "Keep doing what you’re doing, you look great!" And my guard director showed me it was okay—

To be Black, to be Loud, and to be Proud.

So now, I set the tone.

I tell the world I am a QUEEN, and my beauty is my own.

I look in the mirror and I smile, loving every single inch of myself.

I eat what I want, when I want, and I carry no shame.

I know I am not perfect, but daily, I am working on ME.

I dance like no one is watching, even in the middle of a crowd.

I am not what they say.

I am who I know I am.

I AM QUEEN BEAUTY.
