I learned these tricks firsthand as the Lead Makeup Artist on "Escorted Chronicles," directed, co-written, and produced by the talented Julio Alonzo. It was a joy to work with the stunning Mayra Leal—a true beauty queen! Even Julio Alonzo got a quick makeup touch-up to ensure he looked right on film.
Here are the essential rules to follow when prepping faces for the big screen:
1. The "Fresh Face" Rule
Remember that most people don't wear a full face of makeup on a daily basis. Unless a character calls for a specific, dramatic look, every actor should have a clean, fresh-faced appearance. The makeup should enhance their natural features, not distract from them.
2. The Baseline Essentials
Every actor must wear at least a light layer of foundation, powder, and lip color.
Keep it light and true to skin tone. The products should simply even out the complexion, cover minor imperfections, and prevent shine without ever looking heavy or mask-like.
3. Defining Features (Subtly)
If the actor has light or sparse brows and lashes, make sure to lightly apply brow powder and mascara. You don't want the actor to look like they are missing these key features, but the application must be soft enough to remain believable under the lens.
4. Master Highlighting and Contouring
This is where you sculpt the face for the camera, but subtlety is key!
Highlighting: Lighter powder and foundation are great for highlighting. Focus on the high planes of the face, but always blend thoroughly and don't over-highlight—too much can look greasy or unnatural on camera.
Contouring: Darker powder and foundation are perfect for contouring. Use them to create soft shadows, but do not over-contour or make the face look too dark or muddy. The goal is realistic dimension.
5. Blending Prosthetic and Protecting Skin
If you apply prosthetics or lace fronts (like wigs), the blend is critical.
Ensure all edges are perfectly smooth and blended into the actor's natural skin tone to eliminate visible lines.
Protect the skin underneath by applying a high-quality moisturizer before the adhesive goes on. This protects the skin from the harsh materials and ensures a better overall blend.
Do you have a favorite film where the makeup was so good you barely noticed it? Let me know!
