Polyethylene is a stable and inert synthetic polymer with a wide range of uses in cosmetic formulations. The properties of this versatile ingredient change based on its molecular weight and form. For example, in its solid, bead-like form, it was widely used as a gentle abrasive in exfoliating scrubs. However, due to environmental concerns over marine pollution, plastic microbeads are now banned in many rinse-off cosmetic products. In its wax and liquid forms, polyethylene functions as a powerful film-forming agent that helps to lock in moisture and increase product longevity, while also serving as a binding or thickening agent to improve the product's texture and consistency.
