8 Essential Tips for Healthy Locs and Braids
Whether you are rocking a fresh set of braids or you’ve been on your loc journey for years, maintenance is the key to preventing breakage and keeping your hair looking its best.
I often get questions about how to keep protective styles looking fresh. In the photo below, you can see Braxton—he has been growing his locs for three years, and they are healthy, strong, and clean! His locs now are long and down his back.

If you want to maintain your crown like a pro, here are my top 8 tips for locs and braids.
1. The 3-Week Wash Rule
Don't let your hair go too long without a refresh! Wash your hair at least every 3 weeks. Use a deep cleansing, moisturizing shampoo and stick to natural products. Your scalp needs to breathe to grow!
2. Tighten & Interlock
If your locs start to feel a bit loose, give them a good palm roll. To keep them truly secure, make sure to interlock your locs at least every 4 months. This keeps the structure tight and prevents thinning at the root.
3. Dry is Better
This is a big one: Always blow dry your locs or braids. Never let them air dry completely from soaking wet. Moisture trapped deep inside thick hair can lead to a "musty" smell. Make sure they are bone-dry all the way through!
4. Oils Over Waxes
Avoid heavy waxes! They create buildup that is almost impossible to get out. Instead, use lightweight, natural oils. Stay away from anything containing petroleum—it makes the hair greasy and won't allow your style to hold correctly.
5. The Nightly Wrap
Protect your investment! Always put your hair away at night in a silk or satin scarf/bonnet. The constant rubbing of your hair against a cotton pillowcase leads to friction and major breakage.
6. Stop the Itch
If your scalp is feeling tight or itchy, don't scratch! Peppermint essential oil and Tea Tree oil are your best friends. They provide instant cooling relief and keep the scalp healthy.
7. Protective Styling
Putting your locs into a ponytail or braiding them up isn't just for looks—it’s a great way to protect the ends of your hair from daily wear and tear.
8. Consistency is Key
Don’t let your locs or braids grow out too long without professional maintenance. When the new growth gets too heavy for the style, it leads to major breakage. Stay on top of your appointments!
🛍️ The "Healthy Hair" Toolkit
While you're taking care of your hair, don't forget the skin around it!
Loc Spray– Perfect for hair fresh in between retie.
Shampoo– Clean your scalp clean so your hair can grow
Conditioner– Keep your locs moisturized and healthy.
Final Thought
Healthy hair is a marathon, not a sprint. Just like your skincare routine, your hair requires the right products and a little bit of discipline. When your hair is healthy, your confidence shines!
