When you are working a high-energy event or a fast-paced fashion show with multiple models, you have to be fast, precise, and professional.
Hands vs. Tools: The Artist’s Dilemma
One question I often get from aspiring artists is: "JeTara, do you always use brushes, or can I use my hands?" The answer is—it depends on the "Reveal" you are trying to achieve and the environment you are working in.
When to Use Your Hands:
In a high-pressure environment like a church production or a runway show, your hands are your most intuitive tools.
Warmth: The natural heat from your fingertips helps melt products like LAMIK Custom Foundation or cream concealers into the skin for a seamless, "second skin" finish.
Speed: When you have 10 models and only 30 minutes, using your ring finger to pat on a shimmer shadow is much faster than reaching for a brush.
The "Press" Technique: Pressing product into the skin ensures it stays put under heavy stage lights.
When to Use Tools:
Precision: For the LAMIK Brow or a sharp winged liner, a dedicated angled brush is non-negotiable.
Sanitation: When working with multiple models, your hands must be sanitized between every single face. If you aren't able to wash your hands constantly, high-quality, sanitized brushes are the safer professional choice.
Detail Work: Brushes allow you to get into the "nooks and crannies" (like the inner corner of the eye) without disturbing the rest of the makeup.
💡 Timeless Truth:
"Your hands are the connection between your heart and the canvas. Whether you use a brush or your fingertips, the goal is always the same: to reveal the light that is already there. At the Higher D Church kickoff, we didn't just apply makeup; we applied confidence."

When we are backstage with dozens of faces to prepare, we have to balance speed with the highest level of safety. Two things I am very passionate about are the use of disposable tools and why I personally recommend clean hands over gloves.
1. The Power of Disposables
To keep every model safe and every product pure, we never "double-dip." We use high-quality disposable tools that we toss after every single use:
Mascara Wands: Never use the wand that comes in the tube on multiple people. Use a fresh disposable wand for every set of lashes.
Lip Applicators: We scoop our Berry Pink Gloss onto a palette and use a disposable wand to apply it.
Spatulas & Palettes: We never touch the product directly in the jar. We use a stainless steel spatula to move the product to a palette first.
2. Why I Recommend Tools & Hands Over Gloves
I often see new artists reaching for latex or nitrile gloves, but in my career, I have found that clean, sanitized hands are superior for a professional "Reveal."
Texture & Temperature: You cannot feel the texture of the skin or the "melt" of the product through a glove. Your fingertips allow you to sense if the skin is dry or oily and adjust your pressure accordingly.
The Sensitivity of Touch: A glove can feel clinical and cold to a client or a young person at a church event. The human touch is part of the "Kindness" we bring to the chair.
Precision: Gloves can sometimes "drag" on the skin or create friction. Sanitized hands allow for a much smoother, more precise blend.
Sanitation Rule: "Sanitize in front of the client. Let them see you wash your hands or use professional-grade sanitizer before you touch their face. It builds instant trust."
