In the journey of a career, there are seasons of intense building. Last summer, looking through the archives, I came across these photos from my time managing the LAMIK studio in Houston.
They say "teamwork makes the dream work," but sometimes, teamwork is actually "Powered by Pizza!" I still remember this day when Domino's Pizza rewarded our team with free pizza as a "thank you" for our hard work. In the middle of the hustle, it was the perfect fuel.
The Heart of a Manager
Managing people is one of the hardest things you can do, but I truly love it. My career has taken me through so many different "rooms"—from managing a 24-hour restaurant to leadership roles at Dillard’s Edge, a Wax Center, and a Nail Salon.
Each of those roles taught me one vital truth: You cannot do it all by yourself. To build something great, you need a village. At the Houston studio, we weren't just selling makeup; we were running an entire ecosystem of services, events, and community empowerment. Looking back at these photos, it was honestly beautiful what we were building together.
The Power of the Pivot
I’ll be honest with you—looking back at these photos sometimes brings up a lot of emotions. I still can’t give just one reason why I walked away from that specific path. Sometimes I wonder, "Where would I be right now if I had just stayed?"
But then I stop and realize: The "JeTara" I am today wouldn't exist without that pivot.
If I hadn't stepped away, I wouldn't have learned the specific skills I have now. I wouldn't have had the experiences that shaped my current vision. Every "exit" is actually an "entrance" to a new level of wisdom.
What Leadership Taught Me:
Appreciate the Small Wins: Like a surprise pizza delivery during a 12-hour workday.
Delegate with Love: Trusting your team allows the business to breathe.
Respect the Journey: Your path doesn't have to be a straight line to be successful.
💡Timeless Truth:
"Don't regret the paths you didn't take. Instead, use the tools you gathered on those roads to build exactly where you are standing today. Your history isn't a distraction; it's your foundation."
Have you ever walked away from something you loved to find something new?
