I still had access to my GI Bill, but I had to be in school to use it. After trying TSU twice and realizing it wasn't the right fit, I found Texas Barber College. From the moment I walked in, it felt like home—it was a completely different world from Paul Mitchell, and I was excited to dive back into the beauty industry.
Finding My Lane (and What I Didn't Like)
I’ll be honest with you: I didn't really like doing hair. During practicals, I was bored out of my mind! For the first time in my life, the book work came easy, but the actual hair styling? It wasn't for me. However, everything changed when we got to specialties. I fell in love with:
Wigs
Locs
Hair Coloring
By the time I finished school, I was deep into managing LAMIK. I realized that doing hair behind a chair didn't fit my schedule or my heart—but making wigs did.
The Power of the "Custom Unit"
Wigs became my way of staying connected to the hair world on my own terms. I could build them at night or between meetings. I am so proud of the work I did—in just one month, I created all the custom units you see in these photos.
The best part? I didn't do the styling (which I still don't like!). I focused on the construction of the custom units—the foundation. It was the best of both worlds: using my technical skills from school while maintaining my focus on the business of LAMIK.
💡 JeTara’s Timeless Truth:
"Sometimes you have to go through a season of doing what you 'have' to do so you can eventually do what you 'love' to do. School taught me that even if you don't like the whole job, you can find the piece of it that belongs to you. Build your own lane."
