When I was at Texas Barber College, I had to find a way to make my education work for my bank account without draining my energy for the business. That’s how I discovered the power of the Custom Unit. Here is my advice for any artist looking to build a secondary income stream while keeping their eyes on the big prize.
1. Identify the "Frictionless" Skill
I realized early on that I didn't like the "styling" part of hair—the blowouts, the constant standing, the small talk at the chair. But I loved the construction.
The Lesson: Find the part of your trade that you can do "on your own time." For me, it was making wigs at home. It allowed me to manage LAMIK during the day and build my inventory at night.
2. Maximize Your Resources (The GI Bill & Beyond)
I am so grateful for the GI Bill. It allowed me to stay in school and keep my income steady while I was perfecting my craft.
The Lesson: Look for grants, scholarships, or veteran benefits that can fund your education while you build your business. Knowledge is the only investment that never loses value.
3. Don't Do It All—Collaborate!
One of the reasons I was so proud of those wigs was because I focused on what I was good at: the construction. I didn't waste time on the styling I disliked.
The Lesson: You don't have to do every part of the process. If you make great wigs but hate styling, find a stylist to partner with. If you love makeup but hate bookkeeping, hire an assistant. Focus on your "Zone of Genius."
4. Create a "Batch" System
In one month, I created a whole collection of units. I didn't do one here and there; I went into "production mode."
The Lesson: To make a side hustle profitable, you have to be disciplined. Set aside one week or one month to "batch" your work. This creates a surge of inventory and a surge of income.
💡 JeTara’s Timeless Truth:
"A side hustle isn't a distraction from your dream; it’s the fuel for it. LAMIK paid the bills so that my wigs could fund my travel. Never be too proud to pick up a needle and thread or a barber's shear to make your vision a reality."
Always check the ingredients before using a new product. Your skin is the largest organ. Remember, some of what you put on your skin can be absorbed into your bloodstream
